Located in the
Northeastern corner of Hillsborough County, Plant City was
originally named by the native American Indians as
Ichepucksassawas. Sixteen years after Florida was accepted into
the United States, settlers first began to reside in Plant City.
The pioneers had trouble pronouncing the name and re-named it
Village Cork. After Henry Plant extended the railroad into Plant
City, the city was re-named again in his honor. Plant City’s
crop changed from cotton and was replaced by strawberries which
is know nationally Today, over ¾ of the nations winter
strawberries come from Plant City. Census report shows the
population has grown from 349 residents in 1890 to over 33,900
in 2006 with the medium income per household at $38,000 per
year. Residents can chose to live in a country setting or in an
affordable home in a new subdivision. Plant City’s master
planned golf course community is Walden Lakes.
